David Curtis, President and Founder of the Tibetan Language Institute
TLI was founded by David Curtis largely out of a desire to teach Western students the Tibetan language in a simple yet accessible form, enabling them to read and translate Tibetan texts as well as to develop fluency in the colloquial language. Having become interested in Buddhism in 1980, he later trained for five years at Kagyu Ling Monastic College in France (a Dharma center founded by H. E. Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche), and completed the traditional three-year retreat there in 1992. He has received teachings from many Tibetan lamas and Rinpoches, as well as encouragement to develop his activities at TLI (read Letters of Endorsement from Rinpoches). With an academic background in Classical languages, he has been teaching the Tibetan language extensively since 1993 (read Letters of Recommendation from students).
During a ceremony in July of 2007, Gochen Tulku Rinpoche and Namchak Khenpo Ngawang Gelek appointed David as an acharya (Sanskrit for the Tibetan word lopön, or master teacher). See diploma.
